Project / Clitheroe / Barn Conversion
Barn Conversion.
Clitheroe.
A coordinated topographical and measured building survey for AW+A Architects, providing the existing site and building information required to support a barn conversion.

One measured base
for the conversion design.
Brookes Geospatial was appointed by AW+A Architects to complete a combined topographical and measured building survey of an existing barn in Clitheroe.
The brief was to provide a complete existing-condition record that could be used as the measured base for the proposed barn conversion.
Our survey covered the surrounding site, external levels and features alongside a detailed measured survey of the barn itself, including floor plans, elevations and sections.
Site context
The barn in its
surroundings.
The topographical survey established the relationship between the building, surrounding levels, walls, access, hardstanding and external site features.
This gave the architectural team an accurate site framework for understanding how the proposed conversion would sit within the existing setting.
Survey workflow
From site control
to architectural survey drawings.
Scope review
The architectural requirements were reviewed so the field survey captured the right level of building and site detail.
Topographical survey
Levels, boundaries, walls, access, surrounding features and external site context were recorded.
Measured building survey
Internal and external building geometry was measured to create coordinated plans, elevations and sections.
CAD production
The field information was brought together into a clear existing-condition drawing package for design use.
Measured building survey
Existing floor plans
with surveyed levels.
The measured building survey captured the internal layout, wall positions, openings and level information needed to develop accurate architectural plans.
Coordinated survey
Site and building.
Measured together.
The value of the project was in coordinating the external topographical information with the internal and external geometry of the building.
Floor levels, external ground levels, building faces, openings and surrounding features could all be understood within the same survey framework.
This created a more useful design base than separate site and building surveys produced independently.
Building elevations
Existing facades
recorded in detail.
Elevations documented the external form, roof profile, openings, materials and architectural features required for the conversion design.
Deliverables
A complete
existing-condition package.
The survey package provided AW+A Architects with the core measured information needed to progress the barn conversion design.
Site levels, boundaries, walls, access and surrounding external features.
Accurate internal and external building geometry recorded for design use.
Existing layouts, wall positions, openings and key level information.
External facades, openings, roof profiles and visible architectural features.
Cross sections used to describe internal heights, floor relationships and roof form.
Surveyed ground and threshold levels coordinated with the building survey.
Walls, hardstanding, access routes and other relevant surrounding detail.
A consistent measured package prepared for onward architectural design.
The result
A reliable base
for the next design stage.
AW+A Architects received a coordinated set of topographical and measured building drawings covering both the barn and its surrounding site.
The completed survey gave the design team a clear understanding of the existing building, levels and site context before developing the conversion proposals.
