A topographical survey records the position and level of the natural and built features across a site, giving your project team a reliable base to work from.
Depending on the brief, that can include ground levels, contours, buildings, roads, kerbs, drainage, visible services, boundaries, trees, structures and surrounding site detail.

What is a topographical survey?+
A topographical survey is a measured record of the natural and man-made features across a site. It normally shows position and level information and is commonly used for planning, architectural design, civil engineering, drainage and construction.
What does a topographical survey include?+
The scope can include levels, contours, buildings, roads, kerbs, drainage, visible utilities, walls, fences, trees, vegetation and surrounding features. The exact feature list is agreed around the intended use before fieldwork.
How much does a topographical survey cost?+
Our topographical surveys start from £500 + VAT for straightforward small sites. Final cost is influenced by the survey area, amount of detail required, access and vegetation, site complexity, grid / datum and accuracy requirements, output formats and the required turnaround. Send us a site boundary and brief and we will provide a fixed quotation for the actual scope.
How long does a topographical survey take?+
Small straightforward sites may only require a short site visit, while large or complex surveys can require several field and office days. We confirm attendance and expected delivery programme with the quotation.
Do I need one for planning or design?+
Many planning and design projects need accurate existing-site information so proposed layouts and levels can be prepared against the real site. Your architect or planning consultant should confirm the exact submission requirement for your project.
Does a topo include underground utilities?+
Not by default. A standard topographical survey records visible service features such as covers, chambers, cabinets and hydrants. Buried utilities require a separate detection scope, which can be combined with the topo where required.
Can you work to OSGB36 and Ordnance Datum Newlyn?+
Yes. Where required, surveys can be coordinated to the Ordnance Survey National Grid and Ordnance Datum Newlyn, or to an agreed project / local grid and datum.
What do you need to provide a quotation?+
The quickest route is to send the site location, a plan showing the survey boundary, what the survey will be used for, any existing consultant specification and the required deadline or deliverable.
